New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
